Researchers are always welcome to visit the library, use our materials, and make their own copies. Black and white copies are 20¢ per page, color copies are 75¢ per page.
Jefferson County Library’s Northwest Branch has purchased a digital microfilm reader and accompanying computer and printer with a federal Library Services & Technology (LSTA) grant administered through the Missouri State Library. The LSTA grant of $9,053 paid about 75% of the total cost, with the library paying the rest.
The Northwest Branch Library’s local history and genealogy department includes many materials on microfilm and microfiche such as historical Jefferson County newspapers and nineteenth century St. Louis City and County Directories. The new digital microfilm reader allows researchers to view these materials and make digital copies for themselves.
Christine Merseal, genealogy specialist at the Northwest Branch, says the new equipment provides users with more options. “We have two older analog machines, but our users could only print out paper copies of the microfilm images with those machines. With the new Canon Microfilm 350 II, researchers can also e-mail the image to themselves or save the image to a flash drive.” In addition, the new digital microfilm reader produces a much clearer copy.
